Bags under the eyes and sagging eyelids

Blepharoplasty

The solution for bags under the eyes and sagging eyelids is blepharo-plasty. This procedure is a very recent innovation that will light up and rejuvenate your face in a relatively simple manner.

Causes of bags under the eyes and sagging eyelids

The main reason for bags under the eyes and sagging eyelids is the natural ageing process. Sooner or later, everyone faces it. Smoking, drinking and exposure to the sun will only speed up the process.

Aging goes hand in hand with a loss of elasticity of the connective tissue cells. The skin loses its firmness and suppleness; the upper eyelids start to sag. In addition, the connective tissue that keeps the fatty tissue in place becomes weaker. Because of this the fat starts to protrude resulting in the much dreaded bags under the eyes.

Bags under the eyes, the procedure

For the lower eyelids, the so-called “bags under the eyes” are the greatest problem. The most current treatment methods are the removal of the fatty tissue and the hamra technique. After thorough consultation with your plastic surgeon, the proper treatment that will offer you the best result will be agreed upon.

In the first option, it is mainly the fatty tissue that is removed. First and fore mostly, the physician will determine whether the bags under the eyes are truly the result of an excess of fatty tissue or whether they are the result of fluid accumulation. Fatty tissue is always constant and can easily be removed, in contrast to an oedema, whereby the amount of fluid can vary from hour to hour.

If the cause of the bags under the eyes is indeed an excess of fatty tissue, the removal occurs via an incision just under the lashes. Often some skin is removed in order to avoid the effect of an “empty pocket”. This type of treatment allows the orbicular muscle to be tightened as well. This procedure takes about 1 hour and usually occurs under local anesthetic.

During the hamra technique, no fatty tissue is removed. This may lead to what we call “hollow eye syndrome”. The hamra technique consists of spreading out the fatty tissue from the bags under the eyes to the space between the eye and the nose.

The hamra technique may also improve dark circles (which often indicate there is a lack of fatty tissue). Fatty tissue may be transferred to the desired area using the hamra technique.
